Mohali, Punjab – An individual accused in the Gurlal Brar murder case was shot dead outside the District Courts in Mohali on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Harpreet Singh, alias Happy, a key suspect in the case. Following the incident, Goldy Brar, a Canada-based gangster and alleged mastermind behind the Brar murder, has been formally booked by police.
The shooting occurred amidst tight security surrounding the courts complex. Preliminary investigations suggest a targeted attack carried out by rival gang members. Eyewitness accounts indicate multiple assailants were involved, opening fire on Harpreet Singh as he was entering the court premises. Authorities have initiated a massive manhunt to apprehend those responsible for the killing.
Gurlal Brar was murdered in broad daylight in Faridkot, Punjab, in August 2023. The crime sparked widespread outrage and prompted robust action from Punjab Police against the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, of which Goldy Brar is a prominent figure. Several arrests were made in connection with the murder in the months following the event, but Goldy Brar remained at large, reportedly operating from Canada.
Goldy Brar’s Role and International Pursuit
Goldy Brar has been the subject of an Interpol Red Corner Notice, effectively turning him into an international fugitive. Indian security agencies have been collaborating with Canadian authorities to pursue his extradition, hoping to bring him to justice for multiple offenses, including the murder of Gurlal Brar and his alleged involvement in other criminal activities. The latest development, with his formal booking in connection to the killing of Harpreet Singh, is expected to further intensify the pressure on him.
Police officials stated that Harpreet Singh had a criminal history and was involved in several cases of murder, attempted murder, and extortion. His death is being seen as a retaliation by a rival group, potentially escalating gang warfare in the region. Security has been heightened across Punjab, particularly in areas known to be hotspots for gang activity.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in tackling organized crime and cross-border gang operations. The Punjab government has vowed to crack down on criminal elements and restore peace and order in the state. The investigation into Harpreet Singh’s murder is being led by a team of senior police officers, and they are meticulously examining CCTV footage and gathering forensic evidence. They are also questioning individuals with potential links to the case.
This latest episode in the Gurlal Brar murder saga underscores the complex network of criminal groups operating in North India and the logistical difficulties involved in bringing key perpetrators to justice due to international jurisdictional issues. The police are currently working on preventing further retaliatory attacks.
