Gambhir Stands Firm on World Cup Plan Despite Kohli–Rohit Dominance: ‘Jaiswal, Gaikwad Must Seize Their Chances’

Despite outstanding recent performances from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, India head coach Gautam Gambhir has reiterated his long-term World Cup vision, insisting that young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad must continue to maximise every opportunity in the two years leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Kohli–Rohit Shine, Silence Doubts

Kohli and Rohit have been at the heart of India’s resurgence, guiding the team to wins in three of their last four ODIs, including a 2–1 home series victory against South Africa.

In six ODIs since returning in October:

  • Virat Kohli has been India’s top run-scorer with 376 runs, two centuries, two fifties and a strike rate of 107.12.
  • Rohit Sharma is close behind with 348 runs, including two half-centuries.

No other Indian batter has crossed even 200 runs in this period.

Their form has not only reinforced confidence in their ODI future but has also quietened the narrative that India must look beyond them—a discussion many experts believe was premature.

Gambhir: Talent Pipeline Matters More

Speaking after India’s nine-wicket win in the series decider, Gambhir praised the senior duo but maintained that India’s World Cup planning must remain focused on creating depth.

“They are world-class players and their experience is important,” Gambhir said. “But the World Cup is two years away. Young players coming into the set-up must grab their opportunities.”

He specifically highlighted Gaikwad and Jaiswal, both of whom scored centuries in the South Africa series.

Why Gaikwad and Jaiswal Matter

India were forced to reshuffle their batting order after Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer were ruled out with injuries.

  • Jaiswal, usually a reserve opener, replaced Gill and produced a century in the third ODI.
  • Gaikwad, typically an opener himself, was pushed down to No. 4 and responded with a brilliant hundred under pressure in the second match, putting on a 195-run stand with Kohli.

Gambhir called their performances crucial for India’s long-term planning:

“We want a strong pool of 20–25 players before the World Cup. When the captain and vice-captain are available, they start—but Jaiswal and Rutu must be ready whenever they get the chance.”

Looking Ahead

India’s next ODI assignment will be a home series against New Zealand in January, giving the team another window to test its depth while maintaining the balance between experience and youth.
