Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) faced significant disruption on Monday as dense fog descended, leading to the cancellation of over 150 flights and delays for more than 250 others. The adverse weather conditions severely impacted visibility, making flight operations challenging and causing widespread travel chaos for passengers eager to begin their New Year journeys.
According to airport officials, the cancellations and delays primarily affected flights scheduled for early morning and late evening, the periods most vulnerable to fog-related disruptions during the winter months. Low-cost carriers and full-service airlines alike were impacted, leaving thousands of passengers stranded or forced to alter their travel plans. The situation prompted airlines to issue travel advisories, urging passengers to check flight statuses before heading to the airport.
Passenger Frustration and Airline Response

The airport authorities deployed CAT IIIB instrument landing systems (ILS) on select runways, enabling aircraft to land in visibility conditions as low as 50 meters. ATC implemented stringent procedures, including regulating takeoffs and landings, to ensure safe separation between aircraft.
“The safety of passengers is our paramount concern,” said a spokesperson for the airport. “We are closely monitoring the weather conditions and taking all necessary measures to mitigate the impact of the fog. We urge passengers to cooperate with airline staff and exercise patience during this challenging time.” The airport has also increased the frequency of weather updates and improved information dissemination to passengers via display screens and announcements.
Travel experts suggest that passengers traveling to and from Delhi during the winter months should anticipate potential disruptions and consider flexible travel arrangements. Booking flights with sufficient layover time and opting for travel insurance that covers flight cancellations and delays can provide a degree of protection against unforeseen circumstances. Furthermore, staying updated on weather forecasts and airline advisories is crucial for minimizing the inconvenience caused by fog-related disruptions.
The Meteorological Department has predicted similar foggy conditions to persist in Delhi and surrounding areas for the next few days, raising concerns about further disruptions to air travel.
