The story of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, a young officer who displayed exceptional bravery during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, is set to be immortalized on the silver screen with the upcoming movie ‘Ikkis’. Khetarpal’s heroic actions during the Battle of Basantar, a pivotal engagement in the western sector, earned him India’s highest wartime gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra.
Born on December 9, 1951, Arun Khetarpal was commissioned into the 17 Poona Horse regiment, part of the Indian Army’s armoured corps. The Battle of Basantar, fought from December 4-16, 1971, saw fierce clashes between Indian and Pakistani forces. Khetarpal’s unit was tasked with capturing the strategic Jarpal-Walha road, a crucial supply line for the enemy.
The Battle of Basantar & Khetarpal’s Courage
On December 16th, Khetarpal was commanding a small section when they were ambushed by a significantly larger Pakistani force comprising tanks and infantry. Despite being heavily outnumbered and facing intense fire, he fearlessly engaged the enemy. His actions were instrumental in disrupting the Pakistani advance and preventing them from overrunning the Indian position.
The official citation for his Param Vir Chakra vividly details his courage. It notes that he destroyed an enemy tank at point-blank range, and then, despite sustaining injuries, continued to fight, leading his section to neutralise another tank. In the confusion of the battle, Khetarpal’s vehicle caught fire, and he was offered assistance to evacuate. He famously refused, stating that he was perfectly alright and committed to continuing the offensive.
Leading his troops with unwavering resolve, he pressed on, destroying yet another enemy tank before finally succumbing to injuries. He died in action, a martyr for his country, but not before his valiant stand significantly crippled the Pakistani offensive. His last words, reportedly, were “No, I’m alright.”
The movie ‘Ikkis’, starring Agastya Nanda, aims to recreate the intensity and heroism of Khetarpal’s final battle. The title itself refers to the number of enemy tanks he is credited with destroying or disabling – though accounts vary, it firmly established his reputation as a formidable warrior. The film is being directed by Sriram Raghavan, known for his gripping thrillers, suggesting a compelling and realistic depiction of the war hero’s story.
Arun Khetarpal’s story continues to inspire generations of Indian soldiers and citizens alike. His unwavering commitment to duty, incredible bravery under fire, and selflessness in the face of death serve as a powerful testament to the values of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism. ‘Ikkis’ is poised to bring this remarkable story to a wider audience, ensuring that Khetarpal’s legacy endures.
The film intends to offer a close look at the strategic importance of the 1971 war and the significant role played by the armoured corps, alongside bringing to light the personal story of this exceptionally brave officer. The release date for “Ikkis” is yet to be announced.
