Lionel Messi Leads Inter Miami to First MLS Cup Title With Two Assists in 3–1 Win Over Vancouver

Inter Miami created history on Saturday night, lifting their first-ever MLS Cup title with a 3–1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps at a packed Chase Stadium. Lionel Messi, once again at the heart of Miami’s biggest moments, delivered two crucial assists and was named MLS Cup MVP, marking the 44th major title of his legendary career.

A Historic Turnaround for Inter Miami

Miami’s win capped a remarkable journey for a club that sat at the bottom of the league table before Messi’s arrival in July 2023. Since then, the team has secured the Leagues Cup, the Supporters’ Shield, and now the MLS Cup—its biggest achievement since being launched by David Beckham in 2020.

“A beautiful, emotional moment for us and for Miami,” Messi told ESPN. “This was the real objective — to win MLS and reach the top of the American league.”

How the Match Unfolded

Inter Miami struck early when Vancouver defender Édier Ocampo inadvertently scored an own goal in the 8th minute after pressure from Tadeo Allende. Vancouver, led by captain Thomas Müller, responded with heavy possession and attacking intent, eventually equalising in the 60th minute through Ali Ahmed.

Just as momentum began swinging toward the visitors, Messi took control.

In the 71st minute, he intercepted a ball in Vancouver’s half and slipped a perfectly weighted pass to Rodrigo De Paul, who finished coolly to restore Miami’s lead.

Miami sealed the title in stoppage time when Messi once again found Allende, who converted in the 96th minute to make it 3–1 and ignite celebrations across the stadium.

Records and Farewells

Messi’s contributions during the playoffs reached 15 goal involvements, the most in a single MLS postseason.

The match also marked emotional farewells for Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, both former Barcelona teammates of Messi, who retired after the final whistle.

Beckham’s Vision Realised

For David Beckham, who began planning the franchise more than a decade ago, the night was a culmination of persistence, investment and ambition.

“He’s come here to win,” Beckham said of Messi. “Leo is a winner — it’s as simple as that.”

With a new stadium set to open next season and Messi under contract potentially into his 40s, Inter Miami will now aim for back-to-back titles.
