Why ‘The Goat Life’ Was Snubbed at the National Awards: Jury Explains the Decision

Despite its critical acclaim and commercial success, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s survival drama Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life walked away empty-handed from the 71st National Film Awards, leaving fans and industry watchers puzzled. The film, which emerged as one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time, failed to secure a single win at the ceremony held on August 1, 2025.

Now, a member of the National Awards jury has shed light on the reasons behind the film’s omission.

‘Lacked Naturality,’ Said Jury Chairperson Ashutosh Gowariker

Speaking to Onmanorama, jury member Pradeep Nair revealed that The Goat Life was indeed under serious consideration in multiple categories. However, during the final deliberations, Jury Chairperson Ashutosh Gowariker raised key concerns.

According to Nair, Gowariker had previously watched the film at a festival in Goa and felt that the film’s adaptation lacked naturality and the performances didn’t feel authentic enough to warrant recognition. These concerns ultimately swayed the jury’s decision.

Missed Opportunities in Music Categories

The film was also in contention for Best Male Playback Singer and Best Lyrics, particularly for the song “Periyone Rahmane” written by Rafeeq Ahammed. However, these entries were reportedly disqualified due to the lack of proper English translations of the lyrics submitted by the producers — a requirement for jury evaluation.

K R Gokul’s Performance Praised, But Not Awarded

Actor K R Gokul, who portrayed Hakim in the film, was commended by the jury for his fresh and impactful performance. Still, the award eluded him as the jury factored in the overall quality and coherence of the film in acting categories. As Nair put it, “categories also considered the overall quality of the film.”

A Film That Captivated the Audience

Directed by Blessy, The Goat Life is based on the real-life story of Najeeb, a Malayali migrant laborer who was forced into slavery in Saudi Arabia. The biographical survival drama received praise for its intense narrative, powerful visuals, and Prithviraj’s physical transformation. It earned over ₹158 crore at the box office and resonated deeply with audiences.

The film’s absence from the National Awards list has led to debate online, with fans questioning the decision amid the film’s overwhelming public and critical reception.

Who Took Home the Major Awards?

While The Goat Life was overlooked, this year’s Best Actor award was shared by Shah Rukh Khan for Jawan and Vikrant Massey for 12th Fail. The Best Playback Singer (Male) went to Rohit for Premisthunna in Baby, while Kasarla Shyam won Best Lyrics for Ooru Palleturu in Balagam.

A Reminder: Awards Are Subjective

As with all jury-led recognitions, choices can be subjective. While The Goat Life may not have found favor with the National Awards panel this year, its impact on Malayalam cinema and audiences remains undeniable. The conversation around its snub may only further underline the film’s cultural and emotional resonance.
