Vodafone Idea (Vi) has reported a significant narrowing of its losses for the second quarter of fiscal year 2024, alongside a rise in revenue and average revenue per user (ARPU). The telecom operator’s consolidated loss after tax decreased sharply to ₹5,524 crore, a substantial improvement compared to the ₹7,595.5 crore loss reported in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. This positive development reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to optimize its operations and improve its financial performance.
The company’s revenue from operations saw a modest increase of 2.4%, reaching ₹10,716.3 crore, compared to ₹10,406.8 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. This growth in revenue can be attributed to various factors, including increased data consumption and improved subscriber mix. The company is actively focusing on attracting and retaining high-value customers to drive revenue growth.
ARPU Growth and Subscriber Trends
A key highlight of Vodafone Idea’s Q2 performance was the notable jump in its average revenue per user (ARPU), a critical metric for telecom operators. ARPU increased to ₹180, up from ₹145 in the same period last year. This improvement is primarily due to the company’s focus on upgrading its subscriber base to 4G and higher plans, as well as the implementation of various tariff optimization strategies. However, the subscriber base declined to 219.8 million from 225.5 million in the previous quarter, underscoring the challenges the company faces in retaining customers amid intense competition.
Vodafone Idea continues to grapple with a challenging financial situation, burdened by substantial debt and the need for significant investments in its network infrastructure. The company is actively seeking funding to expand its 4G network coverage and roll out 5G services.
