Chennai, August 15: German Grandmaster Vincent Keymer has clinched the Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters 2025 title with one round still to play. The 20-year-old secured the crown after drawing with Dutch GM Jorden van Foreest in Round 8, taking his lead to an unassailable 1.5 points.
All other games in the Masters section ended in draws, ensuring Keymer could not be caught. GM Arjun Erigaisi was held by GM Vidit Gujrathi, while GM Karthikeyan Murali, the only other player who could have kept the title race alive, survived a tense battle against GM Nihal Sarin.
Keymer’s Breakthrough Victory
The win marks a milestone for Keymer, who gained 16.5 rating points, broke into the live top-10 in the world rankings for the first time, and pocketed nearly $30,000 (₹25 lakh) along with 24 FIDE Circuit points. These points could boost his chances of qualifying for the prestigious FIDE Candidates Tournament, depending on results of other top players like GM R Praggnanandhaa.
Speaking after his game against Van Foreest, Keymer admitted he was relieved to escape with a draw:
“I’m just relieved I didn’t lose that game. Missing what I missed, it wouldn’t have been unfair if I lost. It was pure luck that I managed to survive this.”
Other Results in the Masters
- Vidit Gujrathi vs. Arjun Erigaisi: Vidit’s tactical 15.Nxf7! ensured balance, but the game quickly fizzled into a draw.
- Karthikeyan vs. Nihal Sarin: Karthikeyan was under heavy pressure but managed to hold, ending his slim title hopes.
- Anish Giri vs. Awonder Liang and Pranav V vs. Ray Robson were relatively quiet draws.
In the final round, Giri will face his compatriot Van Foreest, while Arjun and Karthikeyan will battle for second place.
Challengers: Pranesh in the Lead
In the Challengers section, 18-year-old GM Pranesh M has taken sole lead after defeating GM Harika Dronavalli. Harika’s mistake with 37.Ne5? allowed Pranesh to pounce with 37…Bf5!, turning the position decisively in his favour.
Pranesh now controls his own destiny—if he wins his last-round game against the lowest seed, IM Harshavardhan G B, he will secure the title and qualify for next year’s Masters.
Hot on his heels are GM Leon Luke Mendonca and GM Abhimanyu Puranik, both half a point behind. Mendonca faces GM Adhiban Baskaran, while Abhimanyu plays GM Iniyan P, making the final round a high-stakes affair.
