Reasi (J&K), August 28, 2025 – At least 34 pilgrims lost their lives in a devastating landslide on the route to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district on Tuesday. Among the deceased, 11 were confirmed to be from Uttar Pradesh.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday expressed grief over the tragedy and announced ₹4 lakh financial assistance for the families of all deceased pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh. He also directed officials to ensure the mortal remains are brought back to their native places without delay.
Victims from Uttar Pradesh
According to officials, those killed included three from Agra – Bhawna (12), Sunita (35) and Sejal (2) – and three from Muzaffarnagar – Kartik (22), Anant (6) and Deepesh Kumar. Chandni (30) from Lucknow/Ghaziabad, Neera (35) from Bareilly/Meerut, and three others – Mamta Devi (45), Ram Viri, and Anjali (25) – whose addresses were not immediately available, were also among the deceased.
Seven others from Uttar Pradesh sustained injuries. They were identified as Sangita, Umang, Kamlesh, Vaishnavi, Purvi, Goran and Mayank.
Condolences from Leaders
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “saddening” and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. “The administration is assisting all those affected. My prayers for everyone’s safety and well-being,” he posted on X.
President Droupadi Murmu also offered condolences, calling the loss of lives “extremely distressing,” and urged for successful relief and rescue operations.
J&K Government Aid
The Jammu and Kashmir government announced ₹6 lakh ex-gratia for the families of those who died in the landslide and other flood-related incidents across the state. Severely injured victims will receive ₹1 lakh, while those with minor injuries will get ₹50,000. Additionally, ₹10 crore has been released to deputy commissioners to meet immediate relief and rehabilitation needs.
