The United States has announced that an additional 25% tariff on imports from India will take effect from August 27, 2025, raising the total duty on Indian goods to 50%.
According to a notice issued by the Department of Homeland Security through US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the tariffs are being implemented under President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14329, signed on August 6. The order directs US agencies to respond to what it calls “threats posed by the Government of the Russian Federation,” targeting India for continuing oil trade with Moscow.
Broad Range of Products Affected
The new tariffs will cover a wide range of Indian goods listed in the annex of the CBP notice. The duties will apply to all shipments arriving for use in the US, or removed from bonded warehouses, after 12:01 am (EST) on August 27.
Trump Warns of More Action
President Trump indicated that further trade restrictions could be imposed on countries continuing to deal with Russia, warning of “very big consequences” if no resolution is reached. So far, the US has refrained from taking similar steps against other major buyers of Russian oil, such as China.
India’s Continued Oil Purchases Trigger Penalty
Earlier in August, Trump had first announced the additional 25% levy, doubling tariffs on Indian imports as a direct penalty for New Delhi’s decision to maintain energy imports from Russia despite Western sanctions.
