As the war in Ukraine enters its 1,267th day, significant developments unfold ahead of a key summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled to take place in Alaska this week. Putin updated North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the upcoming talks, with North Korea’s state news agency KCNA reporting on their conversation. The two leaders discussed the ongoing conflict and Russia’s appreciation for North Korea’s support in the war, particularly their help in “liberating” the Kursk region in western Russia. North Korea is believed to have sent over 10,000 troops to assist Russia, with additional deployments likely, according to South Korean intelligence.
Amid these discussions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy firmly rejected any proposal to cede Ukrainian territory in exchange for a ceasefire. He argued that such a move would only give Russia a foothold to launch further attacks in the future. Zelenskyy also emphasized that any talks about territory should be tied to security guarantees, including the return of prisoners of war and missing children before any discussions on borders and peace.
Ahead of the summit, Zelenskyy plans to meet virtually with US and European leaders to strategize on ways to pressure Russia and prepare for potential peace talks. Zelenskyy voiced concerns that the upcoming Trump-Putin meeting could delay new US sanctions on Russia, a key promise made by Trump should Putin refuse to halt his war efforts. Zelenskyy also criticized the summit as a “personal victory” for Putin, who would be meeting on US soil, thus easing his international isolation.
In the battlefield, Russian forces have made a sudden advance in eastern Ukraine, particularly around the coal mining town of Dobropillia. This new push could be aimed at increasing pressure on Kyiv to make territorial concessions before the summit. The latest reports from Ukraine’s DeepState war map show Russian forces advancing by at least 10 km (6 miles) north, intensifying their efforts to control the Donetsk region.
Ukrainian intelligence also reported a successful strike on a Russian facility in Tatarstan, 1,300 km away from Ukraine, where long-range Shahed drones were reportedly destroyed. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed grave concerns over reports of sexual violence committed by Russian forces, primarily against Ukrainian prisoners of war.
The situation continues to evolve, with both sides preparing for further diplomatic and military actions as the war drags on. The US-Russia summit in Alaska will be a critical moment in the ongoing conflict.
