August 29, 2025: The United Kingdom, France, and Germany have moved forward with the process to reimpose United Nations sanctions on Iran, further isolating the country following a series of attacks on its nuclear sites during a recent 12-day conflict with Israel.
The sanctions process, known as “snapback,” was designed as part of the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. The reimposition of these measures, which could take effect as soon as October, includes freezing Iranian assets abroad, halting arms deals with Iran, and penalizing any developments in its ballistic missile program. These actions are expected to put additional strain on Iran’s already struggling economy.
The move triggers a 30-day countdown for the sanctions to be reinstated, during which diplomatic efforts are expected to intensify, especially from Iran. The country’s refusal to cooperate with inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been a major factor in the current crisis. Iran is also expected to be a key topic during the UN General Assembly next month in New York.
British, French, and German foreign ministers have stated that the sanctions are intended to pressure Iran into resuming negotiations on its nuclear program.
In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the move as “unjustified, illegal, and lacking any legal basis.” He also warned that Iran would respond “appropriately” to what he called an unlawful measure, though he did not provide further details.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed the European decision, expressing that the United States remains open to direct engagement with Iran.
