Trump’s Attempt to Fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook Likely Headed for Court

Washington: A legal battle is looming after US President Donald Trump attempted to dismiss Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, a Biden appointee, over allegations of mortgage fraud. Cook has denied the charges, refused to resign, and vowed to challenge the move in court.

Clash Over Fed Independence

The standoff raises unprecedented questions about the extent of presidential power over the Federal Reserve, an institution designed to operate independently of politics.

Legal experts argue Trump’s case is weak but potentially significant. “It’s an illegal firing, but the president’s going to argue, ‘The Constitution lets me do it,’” said Lev Menand, a Columbia University law professor. “That argument has worked in a few other cases this year. The Supreme Court could end up setting new constitutional law here.”

Cook Pushes Back

Trump announced Cook’s dismissal late Monday via Truth Social, accusing her of mortgage fraud. The allegations, made by Trump appointee Bill Pulte, claim Cook listed two homes as her primary residence to secure better mortgage rates in 2021.

Cook rejected the claims and the firing. “President Trump purported to fire me ‘for cause’ when no cause exists under the law, and he has no authority to do so. I will not resign,” she said.

Cook has hired veteran Washington lawyer Abbe Lowell, who called Trump’s move “bullying without legal authority” and promised to fight the dismissal.

Implications for Markets

If Trump succeeds, analysts warn the Fed’s independence could be undermined, leading to politically driven monetary policy and higher borrowing costs for mortgages, car loans, and businesses.

Cook, appointed in 2022, is the first Black woman to serve as a Federal Reserve governor. A Marshall Scholar and Oxford graduate, she has taught at Michigan State University and Harvard’s Kennedy School.

The Fed now faces a dilemma: comply with Trump’s order or back Cook’s legal challenge until the courts decide.
