Trump Signs Order Easing Space Rules, Boosting Elon Musk’s SpaceX Amid Environmental Concerns

Washington, D.C., Aug 14, 2025 — US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at loosening regulations for the private space industry, a move expected to benefit Elon Musk’s SpaceX as it continues its push for Moon and Mars missions.

The order, signed on Wednesday, seeks to “substantially” increase the number of space launches from the United States by 2030, partly by streamlining or eliminating certain environmental review processes. Critics, however, warn that the change could have serious ecological consequences.

A Boost for SpaceX

SpaceX, already the dominant player in the global launch market, conducted more than 130 rocket launches last year. Trump’s new directive is expected to further accelerate that pace, especially for the company’s Starship program — the massive, next-generation rocket Musk envisions as key to colonizing Mars.

The order directs Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who also serves as NASA’s administrator, to expedite or waive environmental reviews for commercial launches. Musk has long pushed for such deregulation, arguing it would make the United States more competitive in space exploration.

Environmental Pushback

The move has drawn sharp criticism from environmental groups. The Center for Biological Diversity warned that easing oversight could lead to the “massive destruction of protected plants and animals” near launch sites, particularly where Starship operates.

“This reckless order puts people and wildlife at risk from private companies launching giant rockets that often explode and wreak devastation on surrounding areas,” said Jared Margolis, a senior attorney with the group.

SpaceX’s Starship has faced multiple high-profile setbacks, including a June test explosion, but the company maintains that its “fail fast, learn fast” approach will ultimately ensure success.

Political and Industry Context

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has made space exploration a high-profile priority, frequently referencing plans to send humans back to the Moon and eventually to Mars.

The executive order comes despite a public falling out between Trump and Musk in July, following years of collaboration. The policy shift could still deliver a significant advantage to SpaceX, which already secured Federal Aviation Administration approval in May to increase Starship launches from five to 25 per year, with regulators stating the expansion would not harm the environment.

With environmental advocates and the space industry now on opposing sides of the debate, the order sets the stage for a potential legal and political battle over how the United States balances rapid commercial space growth with ecological protection.
