Raipur, Chhattisgarh – Barse Deva, one of the most wanted commanders of the Maoist insurgency in Chhattisgarh, surrendered to security forces on Tuesday, marking a significant blow to the rebel group. Deva’s surrender comes weeks after the death of Hidma, a key military strategist within the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), in an encounter with security forces.
Deva, whose real name is Barse Nanda, carried a reward of ₹16 lakh on his head. He was involved in numerous deadly attacks on security personnel, including the 2017 Burkapal ambush that claimed the lives of 25 Central Reserve Police Force (CRF) personnel. He was a prominent figure in the South Bastar division, responsible for coordinating attacks and recruitment within the region.
Reasons for Surrender
According to officials, Deva’s decision to surrender was influenced by the growing pressure from security forces following Hidma’s death, coupled with disillusionment with the Maoist ideology and the hardships of life in the jungle. The Chhattisgarh Police have been actively pursuing a surrender and rehabilitation policy, offering financial assistance and support for a peaceful reintegration into society.
“The surrender of Barse Deva is a major achievement for the security forces. It indicates the weakening of the Maoist leadership and the increasing effectiveness of our counter-insurgency operations,” stated a senior police officer involved in the operation. “We believe that more Maoist cadres will follow suit and surrender in the coming days.”
Deva reportedly expressed a desire to lead a normal life and contribute to the development of his community. He will be provided with financial assistance under the state government’s rehabilitation policy, which includes provisions for housing, education, and employment opportunities. His surrender is expected to provide valuable intelligence regarding the Maoist network and its future plans.
The recent successes against the Maoists, including the elimination of key leaders like Hidma and the surrender of commanders like Barse Deva, have significantly altered the security landscape in Bastar. Security forces are intensifying their operations to consolidate these gains and further dismantle the Maoist infrastructure. The focus is now on extending security coverage to remote areas and providing basic amenities to the local population, aiming to win their trust and support.
However, security analysts caution that the Maoist insurgency is not yet completely eradicated. The rebels still maintain a presence in several districts of Chhattisgarh and neighboring states, and they are capable of launching sporadic attacks. Continued vigilance and a multi-pronged approach, combining security operations with development initiatives, will be crucial to achieving lasting peace in the region. The surrender of Deva is a positive step, but the fight against Maoism is far from over.
