New Delhi – India’s major telecommunications companies have leveled accusations against Navi Mumbai International Airport, operated by the Adani Group, alleging the airport authorities are hindering the deployment of mobile infrastructure, effectively creating monopolistic conditions. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has received complaints outlining significant delays and denials in securing permissions for crucial upgrades to mobile towers servicing the region, impacting connectivity for both passengers and nearby residents.
According to sources within the telcos, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, the airport’s restrictive policies regarding bandwidth and the height of towers are the primary obstacles. These restrictions, they argue, are far beyond the reasonable safety requirements for airport operations and appear designed to advantage a specific telecom provider allegedly partnering with the Adani Group. The complaints allege that approvals for tower installations and upgrades are being deliberately stalled while preferential treatment is given to this partner.

The alleged blocking of infrastructure is causing significant disruption to mobile services. Passengers at the airport are reported to be experiencing poor call quality, slow data speeds, and network congestion, especially during peak hours. Telcos emphasize the critical need for constant network upgrades to accommodate the growing demand for data, driven by increased smartphone usage and bandwidth-intensive applications. Statements from COAI representatives indicate they will push for transparent and non-discriminatory guidelines for the installation and operation of telecom infrastructure at all airports across India.
Adani Airport Holdings, the parent company of Navi Mumbai International Airport, has not yet issued an official response to the allegations. However, sources close to the company claim that all permissions are granted based on strict adherence to safety regulations and that no preferential treatment is being given to any particular telecom operator. They further state that the airport is committed to providing seamless connectivity for passengers and the surrounding community.
The TRAI is currently reviewing the complaints and is expected to initiate a preliminary investigation to ascertain the facts of the matter. Industry analysts predict the dispute could escalate into a legal battle if a resolution is not reached through dialogue and regulatory intervention.
