The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced maiden call-ups for teenagers Kamalini and Vaishnavi for India’s women’s T20I squad facing Sri Lanka in upcoming matches, marking a significant milestone for the young prospects.
Kamalini, an emerging batting talent from Tamil Nadu, and Vaishnavi, a promising all-rounder from Karnataka, have been included in the 15-member squad selected by chief selector Priya Sharma and her panel. Both players, aged just 17 and 18 respectively, will join seasoned internationals like Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur for the three-match T20I series starting later this month.
The selection comes following impressive performances in domestic circuits and recent national camps. Kamalini topped scoring charts in the 2023 Under-19 One-Day Championship with 589 runs at an average of 58.9, including two centuries. Vaishnavi meanwhile showcased versatility at the 2023 Women’s Senior One-Day Trophy, aggregating 342 runs and taking 12 wickets.
National coach Women’s Team, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, emphasized their potential: “Both players demonstrated exceptional maturity and technical soundness during trials. Their inclusion reflects our commitment to nurturing young talent while maintaining competitive standards.”
The series against Sri Lanka will serve as preparation for India’s upcoming bilateral engagements ahead of the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur welcomed the newcomers: “Adding fresh energy through youth injections can bolster our squad dynamics. We’ll ensure they adapt quickly to international conditions.”
Sri Lanka, ranked eighth in ICC Women’s T20I rankings, recently defeated Bangladesh 2-1 in their last series. India leads the head-to-head record 7-2 in T20Is since 2018, though the Island nation defeated India 2-1 in a T20I tri-series in 2022.
The match venues – Baroda’s Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium and Thiruvananthapuram’s Kerala Cricket Association Stadium – present varied pitch conditions. BCCI plans pre-series practice matches to acclimate the debutants. Selection panel chairman Shamindha Serasinghe congratulated the duo via video message: “This opportunity demonstrates confidence in your abilities. Seize it passionately.”
Fans and cricket analysts widely praised the picks. Former India batsman VVS Laxman tweeted: “Strategic foresight by selectors! Kamalini and Vaishnavi embody the future of Indian women’s cricket. Their fearlessness could redefine our middle-order approach.” Local media highlighted community celebrations in both players’ hometowns, where parents expressed pride in their daughters’ achievements.
Critics caution about workload management for teenagers. Sports physiotherapist Dr. Ananya Singh advised: “Monitor training intensity and recovery cycles. Early exposure to international cricket demands balanced development plans.” BCCI officials confirmed dedicated mentorship programs for debutants, including sessions with mental performance coaches.
Schedule details: First T20I at Baroda on November 3, second and third matches in Thiruvananthapuram on November 6 and 8. The squad also includes stand-by players and will undergo mandatory fitness testing November 1. Live broadcasts will air on Star Sports network with commentary in English and regional languages.
