A 14-year-old boy, Evan Lallo, rang the “bravery bell” at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital, marking the end of his seven-month battle with Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone and soft tissue cancer. This emotional moment came after his scans confirmed that he is cancer-free.
The hallway erupted with cheers, high-fives, and hugs as Evan, surrounded by his medical team, friends, and family, celebrated the completion of his chemotherapy and radiation treatments. For Evan, the bell-ringing ceremony symbolized his victory over the disease.
“I was surprised by how many people were there to support me that day,” Evan said. “It meant a lot seeing everyone who cared for me along the way.”
Evan’s Journey with Ewing Sarcoma
Evan’s journey began in the summer of 2024 when persistent pain in his right shoulder was initially diagnosed as rotator cuff tendinitis. However, when the pain worsened, an MRI revealed a mass in his neck, leading to his diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma in November 2024.
He immediately began treatment, which included multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation over the next seven months. Although the tumor shrank during treatment, Evan struggled with limited mobility in his arm.
Cutting-Edge Surgery and Recovery
To help Evan regain full function, Dr. Megan Jack, a neurosurgeon at Cleveland Clinic, performed a groundbreaking nerve transfer surgery. Dr. Jack is one of the few specialists in the U.S. to offer this procedure. Combined with physical therapy, the surgery significantly improved Evan’s arm strength and shoulder movement.
By June 2025, Evan’s scans showed no signs of cancer, and he was officially cancer-free.
A Message of Hope
Marking his final chemotherapy session with the emotional ringing of the bravery bell, Evan reflected on his journey. His mantra throughout his treatment was simple yet powerful: “Just keep going.” He hopes his story will inspire others facing similar battles, showing them that perseverance and a positive mindset can help them overcome even the toughest challenges.
“I stayed focused on what needed to be done so I could get back to doing the things I love,” he said.
Evan’s bravery and resilience in the face of such a difficult journey serve as an inspiration to all, reminding others that strength and hope can carry them through life’s toughest moments.
