‘Sudarshan Chakra’ To Protect India’s Skies: Explained

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day announced Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a multi-layered defence shield designed to protect India from enemy strikes and cyber threats. The system, likened to Israel’s Iron Dome and the United States’ proposed Golden Dome, will integrate surveillance, cyber protection, and physical safeguards to secure both citizens and critical infrastructure.

India’s ‘Iron Dome Moment’

During Operation Sindoor earlier this year, India’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) played a crucial role in blocking Pakistan’s missile and drone attacks for nearly 100 hours. By merging the Army, Navy, and Air Force’s air defence systems, IACCS gave India real-time situational awareness and the ability to neutralise threats.

Mission Sudarshan Chakra will build on this foundation. Inspired by Lord Krishna’s mythological discus, the initiative aims to expand and modernise India’s defensive shield by 2035, ensuring it is entirely researched, developed, and manufactured within the country under the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) mission.

Beyond Missiles: A Multi-Layered Shield

Unlike traditional missile defence systems, Sudarshan Chakra is expected to go further.

  • It will likely include precision counterstrike capability.
  • Anti-cyber warfare features to neutralise threats like hacking and phishing.
  • Integration of indigenous platforms such as the Army’s Akashteer air defence system, along with radars, AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control Systems), and quick-reaction surface-to-air missiles.

The shield will protect not only military sites but also civilian infrastructure such as electricity grids, communication networks, food and water supply systems, and healthcare facilities — all frequent targets in modern warfare.

The Global Context

India’s plan comes as other nations strengthen their own air defence:

  • Israel’s Iron Dome, operational since 2011, has intercepted thousands of rockets with a success rate of about 90%.
  • The US Golden Dome, announced by former President Donald Trump, is envisioned as a land, sea, and space-based missile defence system.
  • Russia’s S-400 and China’s HQ-9 are already deployed, while countries like Japan and Taiwan are developing similar systems.

With three S-400 squadrons already in place and two more expected, India is now looking to combine indigenous innovation with existing assets to create a uniquely Indian shield.

Towards Strategic Autonomy

Mission Sudarshan Chakra reflects not only a response to Pakistan’s recent aggression but also India’s push for strategic autonomy in defence technology. Collaboration between the military, defence research agencies, and private sector innovators is expected to be central to its development.

As PM Modi said from the Red Fort: “Every citizen must feel protected. Drawing inspiration from Lord Krishna, we have chosen the path of the Sudarshan Chakra.”
