Filmmaker Sriram Raghavan recently discussed his casting choices for his upcoming war film, Ikkis, revealing that Agastya Nanda was not his first pick for the lead role. Initially, Raghavan considered actor Varun Dhawan for the part of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, a hero of the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
Raghavan explained that the consensus among the team shifted towards needing a significantly younger actor to believably portray Khetarpal. “Everyone felt the actor playing Arun Khetarpal must be younger. Varun Dhawan is a fantastic actor, but he has a certain… he’s more established,” the director stated in an interview with Bollywood Hungama. This realization prompted a wider search for a face that better suited the youthfulness and relative inexperience of the character at the time of his heroism.
The director then explored options with debutants, ultimately leading to the selection of Agastya Nanda, grandson of legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan. Raghavan highlighted the freshness and raw talent that Nanda brought to the table, expressing confidence in his ability to embody the role effectively. “We saw many new boys, and Agastya had something… he was good.”
The Challenge of Casting Khetarpal
Finding the right actor for Arun Khetarpal proved to be a significant hurdle during pre-production. The character demands a portrayal of both vulnerability and incredible courage, essential qualities for capturing the essence of a young officer thrust into the heat of battle. Raghavan emphasized that the actor needed to convey a sense of idealism and fearlessness, which is difficult to achieve without the appropriate age range and a certain degree of naiveté.
Beyond finding an actor who physically fit the role, Raghavan and his team were also focused on identifying someone who could tap into the emotional depth of Khetarpal’s story. The filmmaker’s previous works, known for their intricate narratives and nuanced character studies, suggest a dedication to authentic and compelling storytelling. Ikkis promises to continue in this vein, offering a gripping recreation of a pivotal moment in Indian military history.
The film is based on the life of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award, for his exceptional bravery during the Battle of Basantar in the 1971 war. The story focuses on the young officer’s courage and determination in the face of overwhelming odds.
Raghavan’s insight into the casting process reveals a thoughtful approach to character development and a commitment to assembling a cast that can do justice to the historical context of the film. The director’s willingness to discuss the initial consideration of established actors like Dhawan and his subsequent choice of Nanda sheds light on the complexities involved in bringing such a story to the screen. The film’s release is highly anticipated, particularly among those familiar with Khetarpal’s bravery and sacrifice.
Ikkis is anticipated to offer a fresh perspective on a well-known chapter of Indian military history, promising a gripping and emotionally resonant cinematic experience. The film is currently in post-production and is expected to release later this year.
