The United States is reportedly taking secret measures to prevent advanced AI chips from reaching China, with federal authorities embedding hidden location trackers in select shipments of servers and processors.
Targeted Tracking Operations
According to reports citing anonymous sources, US officials have placed covert tracking devices inside shipping containers, server packaging, and even racks carrying AI equipment. These efforts are aimed at monitoring shipments suspected of being illegally diverted to China, despite export restrictions on high-end processors.
The trackers are not used on every shipment due to cost concerns. Instead, they are selectively deployed on “high-risk” consignments identified by investigators. Some of the devices are reportedly as large as smartphones and have been found in hardware linked to companies like Dell and Super Micro.
Smugglers on Alert
Court filings from a recent smuggling case suggest that traffickers are aware of the surveillance, warning each other to inspect shipments for hidden trackers. Despite such risks, demand for restricted chips remains strong in China, given their critical role in powering advanced AI systems.
Nvidia and AMD in Focus
The shipments under scrutiny involve chips designed by US tech giants Nvidia and AMD. Washington has tightened export controls in recent years to limit China’s access to processors capable of training large AI models, citing national security concerns.
Nvidia’s CEO has publicly denied that advanced chips are reaching China illegally, insisting the company complies with export regulations. Still, the covert tracking operations underscore Washington’s determination to enforce trade restrictions.
