August 26, 2025: Years after Game of Thrones ended, one of its most polarizing moments — the Season 5 wedding night assault of Sansa Stark — continues to spark debate. Now, actress Sophie Turner has defended the scene, saying it reflected the harsh realities faced by women in history.
Turner’s Perspective
In an interview with Flaunt, Turner acknowledged the backlash but said she believed the moment carried weight.
“I did feel – and still do – that Game of Thrones shone a light on things that many people were like, ‘Oh god, you can’t show that kind of thing,’” she said. “I understand it can be triggering — I totally get that point of view. But I felt we were actually doing justice to women and the fight they’ve had to endure under patriarchy — being treated as objects, being constantly sexually assaulted. I don’t think there’s one woman I know who hasn’t had a form of that.”
Turner added that if the series were airing today, the episode would likely have included trigger warnings, but she remains proud of how the show confronted such issues:
“I’m really proud to have been part of Game of Thrones, where they didn’t shy away from showing atrocities that happened to women back then. I feel proud to have been part of the conversation.”
The Scene’s Legacy
The controversial moment aired in the episode “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken.” Critics argued it deviated from George R.R. Martin’s novels and exploited violence against women for shock value. Others, however, pointed to Sansa’s eventual rise to power as a narrative of resilience in the face of trauma.
Despite the series ending in 2019, the scene remains one of its most divisive talking points, underscoring the show’s lasting cultural impact.
