Mogadishu – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has vehemently condemned Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, labeling the move a “threat to regional stability” and a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty. The announcement, made by Israel on Tuesday, marks a significant shift in international relations concerning the disputed territory.
Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991, following the collapse of Siad Barre’s government. However, it has not been internationally recognized by any country until Israel’s recent declaration. Somalia maintains that Somaliland is an integral part of its territory, and any recognition of its independence is unacceptable.
President Mohamud, in a strongly worded statement, accused Israel of disregarding the long-standing position of the international community and undermining ongoing efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the Somalia-Somaliland dispute. He emphasized that Somalia remains committed to preserving its territorial integrity and will not tolerate any interference in its internal affairs.
“This decision is a clear violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence,” the President stated. “It is a dangerous precedent that will encourage separatism and instability in the region and beyond.”
The move by Israel comes amid a flurry of diplomatic activity, including ongoing talks between Somalia and Somaliland, mediated by various international actors, including the United States and Qatar. These talks aim to address the political and economic grievances of Somaliland within a unified Somali framework. Israel’s recognition is widely seen as a potential setback to these negotiations.
Regional Implications
Analysts suggest that Israel’s recognition of Somaliland is likely motivated by strategic interests, including securing access to the Red Sea and establishing a foothold in the Horn of Africa. The region is increasingly becoming a focal point of geopolitical competition, with various countries vying for influence. The decision has sparked concerns among neighboring countries and regional organizations, such as the African Union, which have consistently supported Somalia’s territorial integrity.
The African Union has previously warned against any unilateral actions that could jeopardize the stability of Somalia and the wider region. The organization is expected to issue a statement condemning Israel’s move and reaffirming its support for Somalia’s sovereignty.
Somalia has indicated it will be reviewing its diplomatic relations with Israel in light of this development. The extent of any potential repercussions remains to be seen. The Somali government has called for an emergency session of parliament to discuss the matter and formulate a response.
The international community largely remains divided on the issue of Somaliland’s status. While many countries have maintained a cautious approach, recognizing the need to support Somalia’s stability, Israel’s decision could embolden other nations to reconsider their positions. This situation introduces a new layer of complexity to the already fragile political landscape of the Horn of Africa, potentially escalating tensions and hindering efforts towards lasting peace and reconciliation.
The Somali President’s condemnation underscores the seriousness with which Somalia views this development and its determination to defend its territorial integrity. The coming days and weeks will be crucial in determining the long-term impact of Israel’s recognition of Somaliland on the region’s stability.
