Overnight Russian strikes across Ukraine killed at least four people and left dozens wounded, authorities said Sunday. Among the targets was Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers building in central Kyiv, where a fire broke out following the attack.
The State Emergency Service reported damage to several high-rise buildings in the capital, sharing images of firefighters tackling flames on upper floors. “The roof and upper floors were damaged due to an enemy attack. Rescuers are extinguishing the fire,” Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko wrote on Telegram.
An AFP correspondent at the scene saw smoke rising from the government complex, with helicopters dropping water onto the roof to contain the blaze. A nationwide air alert had been issued earlier in the morning.
Civilian Casualties Across Regions
Authorities confirmed that two people were killed and 18 injured in Kyiv alone. In Dnipropetrovsk, a Russian drone strike killed a 54-year-old man and wounded several others. In Sumy, near the Russian border, one person was killed and multiple people, including a nine-year-old child, were hurt after a strike on the outskirts of Putyvyl.
In the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, drone attacks on Saturday evening injured at least 15 people and damaged residential buildings, according to local officials.
War and Peace Talks at a Standstill
The wave of strikes came just days after more than 20 countries, led by France and Britain, pledged to form a “reassurance” force to oversee any future peace deal. Kyiv insists such security guarantees are essential to prevent another Russian invasion, while Moscow has rejected the idea, calling Western troops in Ukraine “legitimate targets.”
Despite efforts by US President Donald Trump to broker an agreement, talks have made little progress. Russian forces continue to occupy around 20 percent of Ukraine, with the conflict now in its fourth year. Tens of thousands have been killed, millions displaced, and vast areas of eastern and southern Ukraine devastated — making it Europe’s deadliest war since World War II.
