Shubman Gill’s appointment as India’s vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup was not a straightforward decision. While his name was announced first by the chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, it was later revealed that he was not initially the first choice for the role. The selectors had also considered other options, including all-rounder Axar Patel, before ultimately deciding to back Gill for the long term.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the decision to appoint Gill came after extensive deliberations within the selection panel. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who joined the meeting virtually, supported the choice to invest in a younger player, seeing Gill as a potential future captain for India.
The Vice-Captaincy Decision
The selection meeting, held on Tuesday, was dominated by discussions around the vice-captaincy role. While Suryakumar Yadav, who will lead the team in the Asia Cup, fully supported Gill’s appointment, it was acknowledged that the decision was not without its complexities. Despite missing out on T20I duties last year due to his Test cricket commitments and injuries, Gill’s leadership qualities were never in doubt, according to Agarkar.
“We see leadership qualities in him,” Agarkar explained. “He was vice-captain when we played in Sri Lanka, and his form in England exceeded our expectations. It’s a great sign when there’s so much pressure as captain.”
Gill’s Role in the Asia Cup
Gill, who currently leads India in Test cricket, was brought back into the T20I setup for the first time this year. His return as vice-captain is a significant step, as he is expected to be a key player for India in the Asia Cup, which will take place in the UAE from September 9 to 28. Despite his return, the decision meant that Yashasvi Jaiswal, despite a strong start to his international career, had to miss out on the squad.
The Future of Leadership
With Suryakumar Yadav approaching his 35th birthday, the selectors felt the need to groom a long-term leader for the team. At just 25, Gill is seen as the most suitable candidate to eventually take over the T20I captaincy. The leadership group has always been confident in his potential, and his appointment as vice-captain signals the start of that process.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Support
Suryakumar, who is the captain for the Asia Cup, expressed his full support for the decision to appoint Gill as his deputy. “Gill has always been part of the first-choice Indian T20 side,” Suryakumar said. “He missed out on a few series due to injuries and other commitments, but we’ve always believed in his potential.”
