Shashi Tharoor Misses Another Congress Meeting, Cites Late Invitation

New Delhi – Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has once again skipped a crucial party meeting, this time citing a last-minute invitation and a prior commitment in Dubai. This marks the second consecutive instance of Tharoor’s absence from important Congress gatherings, raising eyebrows and sparking discussions within the party ranks.

Tharoor informed party officials that he received the invitation to the meeting only one or two days in advance. He stated that he was already scheduled to be in Dubai, fulfilling a pre-existing engagement, making it impossible for him to attend. While the nature of his Dubai commitment wasn’t explicitly detailed, sources suggest it involved a speaking engagement at a literary event.

The skipped meeting involved strategising for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This is particularly pertinent as the Congress party seeks to solidify its position within the INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) bloc and formulate an effective campaign strategy against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Tharoor’s absence is viewed by some as a setback, particularly given his significant profile and articulate voice on national and international issues.

Prior to this, Tharoor had also missed a previous Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, citing health reasons. However, this latest absence, linked to a short notice for the meeting, has fuelled speculation about his relationship with the party leadership. There have been reports of Tharoor expressing dissatisfaction with the limited opportunities afforded to him within the Congress organizational structure.

Past Disagreements & Future Role

Tharoor’s public stance on certain issues has occasionally differed from the official Congress line, most notably during the leadership elections. He contested the Congress presidential elections last year, challenging the candidacy of Mallikarjun Kharge, and while he lost, the contest highlighted some internal fissures within the party regarding its direction.

The Congress party has so far refrained from making any official statement regarding Tharoor’s repeated absences. However, sources indicate that the leadership is keen on resolving any potential misunderstandings and ensuring Tharoor’s active participation in the election campaign. His ability to connect with younger voters and articulate nuanced arguments is seen as a valuable asset.

Political analysts suggest that Tharoor’s recent actions could be a subtle form of signalling his concerns. It remains to be seen whether the Congress leadership will proactively address these concerns and find a suitable role for him within the party’s election strategy. The upcoming weeks will be crucial in determining Tharoor’s future role and commitments to the Congress.

Tharoor is a prominent MP representing Thiruvananthapuram in the Lok Sabha and continues to be a sought-after speaker and commentator. His continued influence within and outside the party makes his engagement – or disengagement – a significant factor as the nation prepares for the general elections.
