Schools Closed in Ghaziabad, Noida, Chandigarh and Jammu & Kashmir Amid Heavy Rain

As heavy rainfall continued to disrupt normal life across North India, authorities ordered the closure of schools in several states and union territories on Wednesday, September 3. The decision was taken citing safety concerns, waterlogging, and damaged infrastructure in many regions.

Uttar Pradesh

In Noida and Greater Noida, district magistrate Medha Roopam directed the closure of all schools up to Class 12 across government, aided, private, CBSE, ICSE and other boards. District education officer Rahul Pawar said the order was issued purely for the safety of children.

Ghaziabad followed suit, declaring a holiday for all schools from nursery to Class 12. Officials said the decision would be reviewed based on weather conditions in the coming days. Bulandshahr and Baghpat administrations also ordered school closures on September 3 after heavy showers.

Chandigarh

Authorities announced that all schools in Chandigarh will remain shut due to persistent rainfall. The city, which serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana, has recorded over 140 mm of rain since Sunday. Colleges, universities, and polytechnic institutions in Punjab have also been asked to remain closed until Wednesday.

Himachal Pradesh

The state has been hit by widespread rain, triggering landslides and blocking more than 1,000 roads, including four national highways. An orange alert has been issued for Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur and Kinnaur districts, while a yellow alert is in place for Una and Bilaspur. All government and private educational institutions, including coaching centres, in Shimla, Kangra and Sirmaur have been ordered to close. Online classes will continue where possible.

Jammu & Kashmir

In Jammu Division, all schools have been directed to shut on September 3 due to warnings of heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides. Authorities said online classes may be conducted to ensure continuity of education.
