Few filmmakers have shaped the cultural imagination of Malayali families as deeply as Sathyan Anthikad. For over four decades, his films have carried humor, warmth, and slices of everyday life into homes across generations. From Nadodikkattu and Sandesham to Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal and Manassinakkare, his stories continue to resonate.
Now, with the release of Hridayapoorvam, Sathyan reunites with Mohanlal after a decade, promising another chapter in their celebrated collaboration. In a conversation ahead of the release, the veteran director reflected on his creative journey, working with younger voices, and bringing back Mohanlal in a role full of warmth and charm.
On How Hridayapoorvam Began
The story originated from an idea by Sathyan’s son Akhil Sathyan, later developed with screenwriter Sonu TP. Mohanlal, on hearing the narration, immediately approved and even suggested the title Hridayapoorvam.
Shooting in Pune
Unlike most Malayalam films set in Mumbai, Sathyan chose Pune for its military backdrop and natural beauty. Locations in Pune and nearby Lonavala added freshness to the film’s visuals.
Working With Mohanlal Again
Sathyan praised Mohanlal’s ability to slip in and out of character effortlessly. “He elevates a role beyond what you imagine, while keeping it consistent. Even after decades, he brings the same passion,” he said, adding that Mohanlal’s performance as Sandeep Balakrishnan reminded him of their most successful collaborations.
Casting Sangeeth Prathap
The director revealed that Sangeeth’s spontaneity impressed both him and Mohanlal. Their chemistry on screen, he believes, adds vibrancy to the film.
Return to Sync Sound
For the first time in 34 years, Mohanlal acted in sync sound. Initially hesitant, he grew to appreciate its rawness and realism, capturing every natural nuance of performance.
The Fahadh Faasil Reference
One scene, in which a character praises Fahadh Faasil in Mohanlal’s presence, has already gone viral. “Many stars would hesitate at such a line, but Lal laughed out loud when he read it. Only someone without ego could enjoy that,” Sathyan said.
Casting Malavika Mohanan
With Aishwarya Lekshmi unavailable, Malavika Mohanan was chosen for her multilingual ability and natural screen presence. Sathyan dismissed speculation about her pairing with Mohanlal, saying assumptions about age-gap romance were misplaced.
Music and Younger Collaborators
Music is by Justin Prabhakaran, whose compositions Sathyan compared to the melodic touch of Ilaiyaraaja and Vidyasagar with Rahman-like freshness. He also credited his younger team—his sons Akhil and Anoop, cinematographer Anu Moothedath, and others—for keeping him connected with new-generation audiences.
On Legacy and Criticism
Sathyan admitted missing veterans like KPAC Lalitha, Innocent, and Oduvil Unnikrishnan, whose faces once naturally filled his scripts. Yet he remains grateful for having captured their best work on screen. On criticism, he said: “Once a film is released, the audience is free to interpret it however they want. That freedom is what keeps cinema alive.”
With Hridayapoorvam, he hopes to continue telling stories that resonate across generations, just as his classics still do.
