Samsung Electronics Unveils Tri-Fold Phone: Dual Hinges and Tablet-Like Display

Samsung Electronics has officially unveiled the Tri-Fold Phone, a groundbreaking smartphone prototype that folds twice, offering a tablet-sized display when fully opened. The reveal took place at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit’s K-Tech Showcase in Gyeongju, South Korea.

A New Era of Foldable Innovation

Presented at 9 a.m. during the K-Tech Showcase, the Tri-Fold Phone represents a major leap in foldable technology. Unlike conventional foldable models, this device features two hinges that allow the screen to fold in three parts, creating a 10-inch display when unfolded—similar in size to a compact tablet.

The device showcases three connected screens side by side, creating a wide horizontal form factor. When folded, it resembles a standard smartphone with a 6.5-inch outer display, comparable to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold series. However, the prototype was displayed behind glass and was not available for hands-on testing.

Premium Design and Pricing

Due to its complex hinge design and additional display layers, the Tri-Fold Phone’s price is expected to exceed 3 million Korean won (approx. USD 2,200). The initial production run will reportedly be limited to 50,000–100,000 units, targeting high-interest markets such as South Korea and China.

Industry experts believe Samsung’s move is not aimed at mass sales but rather at reinforcing its technological leadership and premium brand image.

“Amid the slowdown in the global foldable market, Samsung seems focused on showcasing innovation and product diversification,” a tech industry insider noted.

Competition in the Tri-Fold Space

Samsung’s Tri-Fold Phone enters a competitive landscape following Huawei’s Mate XT, the world’s first tri-fold smartphone launched in September 2024, and its upgraded successor, the Mate XTs, unveiled earlier this month.
