Sachin Tendulkar has shared his thoughts on Shubman Gill’s performance as India’s Test captain during the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. India and England ended the five-match contest in a 2-2 draw — a result that brought mixed reactions.
This was Gill’s first outing as Test skipper, following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format earlier this year. Tendulkar said the outcome was solid, though he admitted it could have gone differently. He also praised Gill’s calm leadership and ability to adapt to pressure.
Tendulkar noted that Gill kept trying new approaches whenever England built strong partnerships. He said good captaincy often comes down to how well bowlers stick to their plans. If bowlers lose discipline, captains are left with limited options, and it becomes difficult to control the flow of runs.
Despite those challenges, Tendulkar felt Gill handled the team well. He highlighted the importance of keeping the dressing room calm and maintaining focus even during difficult moments. He also credited Gill for keeping England’s aggressive “Bazball” strategy in check.
Speaking about Gill as a batter, Tendulkar was full of praise. He pointed out that Gill scored 754 runs in the series — the highest ever by an Indian captain in a single Test series and second only to Don Bradman’s 801.
Tendulkar said Gill looked composed at the crease, with precise footwork and sharp shot selection. He added that Gill respected good deliveries, defended when needed, and left the ball wisely — all signs of a mature batter with a clear mindset.
Overall, Tendulkar called it a promising start for the young skipper and said the experience will only help him grow stronger in the role.
