Rashid Khan Becomes Leading Wicket-Taker in T20Is as Afghanistan Beat UAE

Afghanistan’s star leg-spinner Rashid Khan has scripted history by becoming the highest wicket-taker in T20 internationals, guiding his team to a 38-run victory over the United Arab Emirates in Sharjah.

Rashid breaks Southee’s record

The 26-year-old picked up 3/21, dismissing Ethan D’Souza, Asif Khan, and Dhruv Parashar to finish with a career tally of 165 wickets in 98 matches. With this, he surpassed New Zealand pacer Tim Southee’s 164 wickets in 126 T20Is, setting a new benchmark in the format.

Afghanistan’s batting effort

Put in to bat, Afghanistan posted a strong 188/4.

  • Ibrahim Zadran top-scored with 63 off 40 balls.
  • Sediqullah Atal struck his maiden T20I fifty, scoring 54 from 40 deliveries.
  • The duo added 84 runs for the second wicket, laying a solid platform.
  • Late cameos from Karim Janat (23 off 10)* and Azmatullah Omarzai (20 off 12)* powered the total past 180.

UAE’s chase falls short

UAE skipper Muhammad Waseem gave his side hope with a blazing 67 off 37 balls (6 sixes, 4 fours), registering his 23rd T20I half-century. But once he was dismissed, the innings collapsed, finishing at 150/8.

Muhammad Rohid and Saghir Khan picked up two wickets each for UAE, but they could not contain Afghanistan’s batting depth.

Series context

This victory marked Afghanistan’s first win in the tri-series after losing to Pakistan in their opener. The tournament, featuring Afghanistan, UAE, and Pakistan, will see the top two teams play the final on September 7. Pakistan currently leads with two wins.

Rashid’s legacy grows

With his record-breaking feat, Rashid Khan further cements his reputation as one of the greatest bowlers in T20 history, combining skill, consistency, and match-winning ability.
