Hyderabad was hit with another round of heavy rain on Thursday evening, causing widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls, and power outages, especially during the busy evening rush hour.
The heavy downpour led to severe disruptions across several parts of the city, with the IT corridor and nearby areas experiencing the worst of it. Gachibowli recorded a staggering 123.5 mm of rainfall, with similar figures reported from the Khajaguda Sports Complex. Other areas such as Srinagar Colony, Khairatabad, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Ameerpet, Manikonda, and Shaikpet also saw heavy rainfall, exacerbating the situation.
Traffic was at a standstill on major roads, with motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders, struggling to wade through waist-deep water. The Hyderabad and Cyberabad traffic police were on high alert, issuing warnings and trying to manage the gridlock. Meanwhile, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s (GHMC) Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams were deployed to clear the waterlogged areas, fallen trees, and broken electrical wires.
In response to the heavy rain, the authorities opened one gate of the Himayath Sagar reservoir to release excess water into the Musi River, a precautionary measure to prevent further flooding in the city.
Weather Forecast for the Coming Days
The weather department has predicted more rain for Hyderabad. Today (Friday), cloudy skies are expected with light to moderate rain or thunderstorms, especially during the evening and night. Isolated intense rain spells accompanied by gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are also likely.
Saturday is expected to bring more of the same, with heavy rain continuing throughout the day and night. Temperatures are forecasted to hover around 27°C, along with gusty winds and a high chance of precipitation.
Residents and commuters are advised to exercise caution, as the risk of water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas remains high. Authorities are urging people to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay indoors, particularly during intense rain spells.
