The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the heavy rainfall in Punjab will subside starting Thursday, with a noticeable decline expected to last for the next three to four days. Surinder Paul, director of IMD Chandigarh, confirmed that rainfall activity in the region will significantly reduce, offering some relief to the flood-affected areas.
Over the past 24 hours, 19 districts in Punjab have experienced rainfall exceeding normal levels by 60% or more. Key areas like Sangrur, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, Pathankot, Jalandhar, and Barnala have been hardest hit, with a recorded 30 mm of rain against the usual 4.6 mm. The persistent rains have caused widespread flooding and waterlogging, particularly in farmlands.
Paul clarified that no warnings for heavy rainfall have been issued until September 9. Rainfall is also expected to decrease in neighboring regions, including Chandigarh, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.
Monsoon Season Overview
As of September 3, Punjab has received 575 mm of rainfall since the start of the monsoon season on June 1, which is 54% above the Long Period Average (LPA). In comparison, last year saw a 22% shortfall in rainfall for the same period. August, in particular, brought 253.7 mm of rain, marking the wettest month in the past 25 years. This rainfall is 74% above the LPA, signaling a significant departure from the past.
With the weather forecast predicting relief, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the region recovers from the floods.
