Premier League: Tottenham Beat Manchester City 2-0 at Etihad as Winning Run Continues

Tottenham Hotspur extended their strong start to the Premier League season with a 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. Goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha sealed the result, as new coach Thomas Frank maintained his unbeaten run.

Spurs Capitalise on City Errors

Tottenham, who had thrashed City 4-0 at the same venue last season, once again took advantage of defensive lapses.

The opener came midway through the first half when Pape Matar Sarr’s clever flick released Richarlison, whose low cross was met by Johnson. His finish was initially ruled offside, but VAR overturned the decision, confirming Spurs’ lead.

On the stroke of half-time, City debutant James Trafford—signed for £27 million from Burnley—was caught under pressure while trying to play short from the back. The loose ball fell to Palhinha, who struck powerfully to make it 2-0.

Trafford’s Tough Start

Trafford endured a difficult debut, nearly sent off for a rash challenge on Mohammed Kudus before his costly mistake led to the second goal. With Ederson benched due to illness—and speculation about his future continuing—City’s goalkeeping situation remains under scrutiny. Reports also suggest interest in PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma as a potential replacement.

Injury Adds to City’s Woes

City’s afternoon worsened when defender Rayan Ait-Nouri went off injured in the first half, replaced by Nathan Ake. Pep Guardiola’s side failed to recover momentum and created few chances to threaten Spurs’ lead.

Spurs on a Roll

For Tottenham, the win reinforced a confident start under Frank, leaving the team unbeaten and brimming with belief early in the campaign. Johnson and Palhinha’s goals, along with a disciplined team display, earned Spurs another statement result against the defending champions.
