Liverpool secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle United as 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha scored a sensational 100th-minute winner, becoming the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer.
Liverpool’s Early Control
The Reds went ahead in the 35th minute when Ryan Gravenberch unleashed a precise long-range strike. Newcastle’s troubles deepened before halftime as Anthony Gordon received a red card for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk.
Just 20 seconds into the second half, Liverpool doubled their lead when new signing Hugo Ekitike finished calmly from Cody Gakpo’s assist.
Newcastle Fight Back
Despite being down to 10 men, Newcastle roared back. Bruno Guimaraes headed in to cut the deficit, before William Osula, making the most of his limited minutes under Eddie Howe, equalised from Dan Burn’s assist.
The home side, backed by over 50,000 fans at St. James’ Park, looked set to salvage a point until Liverpool struck late.
Ngumoha’s Historic Moment
In stoppage time, Mohamed Salah’s pass and a clever dummy from Dominik Szoboszlai set up Ngumoha, who slotted home coolly. The teenager’s goal not only sealed the victory but also etched his name into Liverpool’s record books.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised the spectacle:
“Maybe it wasn’t the best game tactically, but I think every fan around the world enjoyed watching this.”
Table and Transfer Talk
The result leaves Liverpool level on points with Tottenham and Arsenal, who visit Anfield next. Newcastle, still winless this season, continue to struggle without star striker Alexander Isak, who has not featured as he pushes for a transfer.
Liverpool are widely reported to be his likely destination, though Newcastle have rejected a £110 million bid and are holding out for a British record fee of £150 million.
