Polish Armed Forces Down Russian Drones in Its Airspace

Poland’s armed forces reported that Russian drones were successfully downed in its airspace early on Wednesday morning, marking the first time the NATO member country has directly engaged Russian assets since the Ukraine war began in 2022.

The operation involved Polish and NATO aircraft, with authorities deploying forces in response to multiple violations of Polish airspace. The country’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, was at the scene, overseeing the operation and later tweeting about the ongoing efforts to address the airspace violations.

Airports Shut Down Amid Drone Activity

In response to the threat, Poland temporarily shut down four airports as reports of the drones began to emerge. Warsaw’s Chopin International Airport confirmed that no flights were operating, although the airport remained open. Passengers were advised to stay updated through government announcements and airline communications.

Unprecedented Violation of Polish Airspace

Poland’s operational command described the drone activity as an “unprecedented violation” of the nation’s airspace, triggered by Russian actions in Ukrainian territory. According to the Polish armed forces, the drones that entered Polish airspace posed a significant risk to the safety of its citizens.

The drones were shot down, and efforts are underway to locate potential crash sites. Polish and allied forces remain on high alert, prepared for further operations if necessary.

NATO’s Response to Russian Drone Incursion

Poland, a NATO member state, has briefed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the situation, with NATO operations in Poland being led by the US military. Jim Townsend, a former US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, called the drone incursion a “test” for NATO, emphasizing that the alliance’s response to such violations must be swift and coordinated.

Ongoing Russian Strikes in Ukraine

As Polish forces responded to the drone activity, Russian airstrikes continued across Ukraine, with regular alerts from Ukrainian armed forces about incoming drones and cruise missiles. Ukraine has urged its citizens to seek shelter as the attacks escalate.
