PM Modi to Address UNGA in September, May Visit the US Next Month

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) next month, according to a provisional list of speakers released by the UN. The session is set to open on September 9, with the high-level General Debate scheduled from September 23-29.

India’s Prime Minister is listed to speak on the morning of September 26, alongside other world leaders, including the heads of government of Israel, China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

This marks another significant diplomatic moment for PM Modi, who previously visited the US in February for a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. During that meeting, both leaders expressed their intent to finalize a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by fall 2025.

While trade negotiations continue, US President Trump has imposed tariffs on India, including a 25% tariff on India’s purchases of Russian oil, set to take effect on August 27. In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs criticized these tariffs as unjustified, stating that India would take necessary steps to protect its national interests and economic security.

The UNGA’s provisional list of speakers is subject to change as the event approaches, and updates may be made over the coming weeks.

The high-level session at the UN is often referred to as the “busiest diplomatic season,” with significant global attention on key issues, including the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and the war in Ukraine.

In the meantime, President Trump has touted successes in international diplomacy during his second presidential term, including peace agreements in several regions. He has also claimed credit for preventing a conflict between India and Pakistan earlier this year.
