Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the ‘Shaurya Anmol Samelan’ in New Delhi on Thursday, paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the Sahibzadas – the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh – and emphasized the need for India to shed the remnants of a ‘slave mentality’ to fully realize its potential. The event commemorated the martyrdom of the young sons of the tenth Sikh Guru, who were executed by the Mughal forces in the 18th century.
Modi lauded the unwavering faith and resilience displayed by the Sahibzadas, who chose death over conversion to another religion. He stated that their sacrifice was not merely a historical event but a continuous source of inspiration for every Indian, urging citizens to draw strength from their example. He highlighted that the Sahibzadas, despite their young age, stood firm in their principles and refused to compromise their beliefs, embodying the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ (One India, Great India).
Addressing Colonial Past
The Prime Minister’s call to end the “slave mentality” is being interpreted as a direct reference to the lingering effects of colonial rule in India. He argued that centuries of subjugation had instilled a sense of inferiority and dependence, hindering the nation’s progress. Modi stressed the importance of recognizing and celebrating India’s own history, culture, and achievements, rather than solely focusing on external influences.
He further elaborated that this ‘slave mentality’ manifests in various forms, including a lack of self-confidence, a preference for foreign goods, and a tendency to undervalue indigenous knowledge and skills. He encouraged a shift in mindset, advocating for self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) and a renewed sense of national pride. Modi asserted that India’s future prosperity hinges on its ability to embrace its heritage and forge its own path.
The event also saw participation from various dignitaries and members of the Sikh community. Speakers emphasized the significance of the Sahibzadas’ sacrifice in upholding the values of justice, equality, and religious freedom. The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting India’s diverse cultural heritage, ensuring that the stories of courage and sacrifice like that of the Sahibzadas continue to inspire generations to come. He also spoke about the ongoing efforts to connect historical sites and promote tourism related to India’s rich past.
Modi’s address comes at a time when India is actively seeking to redefine its identity on the global stage and assert its position as a leading power. The emphasis on shedding colonial influences and embracing self-reliance aligns with the government’s broader policy objectives. The Prime Minister concluded by stating that honoring the sacrifices of the past is crucial for building a strong and vibrant future for India, a future where every citizen feels empowered and connected to their roots.
