Miami: A viral moment from the Philadelphia Phillies’ 9-3 win over the Miami Marlins on September 5 has sparked widespread outrage after a woman, dubbed “Phillies Karen”, took a home run ball from a young fan.
How It Happened
In the fourth inning, Phillies outfielder Harrison Bader launched a home run into the stands at loanDepot Park. Drew Feltwell caught the ball barehanded and gifted it to his son, Lincoln, as a birthday present.
Moments later, video footage showed a gray-haired woman approaching the pair, pointing at the ball, and speaking forcefully. Not wanting a scene in front of his child, Drew handed the ball over. “I just wanted to keep my kid safe,” he later explained.
Fans online were furious, branding the woman “Phillies Karen” and accusing her of bullying a child.
How Teams Responded
Phillies staff quickly provided Lincoln with team merchandise, while Marlins officials also stepped in to comfort him. The following day, Harrison Bader personally met the boy, gifting him a signed bat and photo to make up for the incident.
Online Backlash & Mistaken Identities
The clip went viral, with social media users speculating on the woman’s identity. Two women — Leslie-Ann Kravitz, linked to Hammonton Public Schools in New Jersey, and Cheryl Richardson-Wagner — were both falsely accused.
- Hammonton Public Schools issued a statement clarifying Kravitz was not the woman and had never worked there.
- Richardson-Wagner also denied involvement, joking on Facebook: “OK everyone… I’m NOT the crazy Philly Mom.”
The Bigger Picture
While the woman’s true identity remains unconfirmed, the incident highlights how quickly viral moments can spiral into misinformation and false accusations. For young Lincoln, however, the lasting memory will likely be meeting his baseball hero.
