Independence Day celebrations in Karachi turned deadly after incidents of aerial firing left three people dead and more than 60 others injured, according to local media reports.
Rescue officials told Geo News that the victims included an 8-year-old girl struck by a stray bullet in Azizabad and a man named Stephen who was killed in Korangi. Another elderly man also lost his life during the festivities. At least 64 people suffered gunshot wounds across various parts of the city.
Authorities condemned the dangerous practice of celebratory gunfire, calling it “reckless” and urging citizens to adopt safer ways of marking national events. Police have launched investigations and promised strict action against those involved.
A Broader Issue of Gun Violence in Karachi
Reports from ARY News indicate that Karachi has been grappling with high levels of gun-related violence. In January alone, 42 people — including five women — died in shooting incidents, with many linked to robbery attempts, personal disputes, and stray gunfire.
Other safety concerns, such as road accidents, have also contributed to fatalities. Data from the Chhipa Foundation showed that in January, 528 people were injured in road crashes, while 36 died. Robbery resistance incidents accounted for three deaths and 15 injuries during the same period.
Authorities continue to call for stricter enforcement and public awareness to prevent such tragedies during celebrations and in daily life.
