Odisha temple stampede: 9 dead, founder calls it ‘Act of God’

JEYPORE, ODISHA – Tragedy struck the Venkateswara Swamy temple in Odisha’s Koraput district as a stampede claimed the lives of nine individuals and left several others injured. The incident occurred during a large gathering of devotees.

The temple, built by Kunduru Ullekh, has become a focal point of controversy following the devastating event. Ullekh, while expressing his condolences, attributed the stampede to an “Act of God,” stating that no one could be held responsible. This statement has drawn sharp criticism and sparked debate about accountability and safety measures at religious gatherings.

The Temple Founder’s Perspective

In an interview, Ullekh recounted the temple’s origins, stating he built it after experiencing a divine vision. He emphasized his devotion and good intentions, suggesting the tragedy was beyond human control. He said, “I am deeply saddened by what happened. I never imagined such a thing could occur at a place of worship I built with so much love and dedication. It was an act of God, something beyond our control.”

Ullekh further detailed the challenges he faced in establishing the temple. He spoke of financial constraints, local resistance, and the arduous journey to transform the site into a place of pilgrimage. “Building this temple was not easy. It was a dream, a mission. I poured my heart and soul into it, facing numerous obstacles along the way,” he added.

Investigation and Aftermath

Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede to determine the exact cause and identify any lapses in crowd management or safety protocols. Preliminary reports suggest that the large influx of devotees, combined with inadequate crowd control measures, contributed to the chaotic situation. Local officials are working to provide assistance to the injured and support the families of the deceased.

The Odisha government has announced compensation for the victims’ families and pledged to implement stricter safety regulations at all major religious sites across the state. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his grief over the incident and vowed to prevent similar tragedies in the future. A high-level committee has been formed to review existing safety protocols and recommend necessary improvements.

This tragic event has highlighted the critical need for enhanced safety measures and effective crowd management at religious gatherings to ensure the well-being of devotees and prevent such incidents from recurring. The investigation is ongoing and will determine the full extent of the factors that led to this devastating event.
