On the eve of the sixth anniversary of Article 370’s abrogation, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed the growing speculation around the restoration of statehood, saying he does not expect any major announcement on August 5.
In a post on social media platform X, Abdullah said he has heard “every possible permutation and combination” about what might happen in Jammu and Kashmir, but insisted that “nothing will happen tomorrow.”
“Fortunately, nothing bad will happen but unfortunately, nothing positive will happen either,” he wrote, while maintaining hope for some progress during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament. “I’m still optimistic about something positive for J&K in this monsoon session of Parliament — but not tomorrow.”
Abdullah clarified that his statement was not based on any inside information. “No, I haven’t had any meetings or conversations with people in Delhi. This is just a gut feeling. Let’s see this time tomorrow,” he added.
His remarks appear aimed at cooling speculation on social media suggesting a possible announcement related to Jammu and Kashmir’s political status. Some of these rumours gained traction after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah met separately with President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday.
Since the revocation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, the demand for restoring full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir has remained a key political issue, with leaders across party lines continuing to press for it.
