The Indian Railways is set to introduce eleven new trains, including Vande Bharat sleeper variants and Amrit Bharat Express services, to enhance connectivity in poll-bound West Bengal and Assam. This significant infrastructure push aims to improve transportation options for residents and facilitate travel during the upcoming election season. The announcement comes as preparations intensify for the Lok Sabha elections in these crucial eastern states.
Among the new services are two Vande Bharat sleeper trains. One will run between Howrah in West Bengal and New Jalpaiguri, also in West Bengal, offering a comfortable and faster travel experience for passengers traveling between these key cities. The second Vande Bharat sleeper train will connect Agartala in Tripura with Kamakhya in Assam, bolstering connectivity to the northeastern region. These sleeper variants are designed for longer routes, providing overnight travel options with enhanced amenities.
Amrit Bharat Express Services
The rollout also includes five Amrit Bharat Express trains, a new category of passenger trains designed to provide affordable and comfortable travel. These trains will operate on various routes within West Bengal and Assam, connecting smaller towns and cities to major railway hubs. The routes include Silchar-Kolkata, Murkongselek-Kolkata, Rangiya-Kolkata, Alipurduar Junction-Kolkata, and Agartala-Sealdah. These services are expected to significantly benefit local commuters and boost regional economies.
Further enhancing the railway network, three new conventional trains will also be introduced. These include a train between Kolkata and Radhikapur, another between Kolkata and Jaynagar, and a third connecting Dibrugarh with Kolkata. These conventional trains will cater to diverse travel needs and provide additional capacity on busy routes.
The introduction of these trains is part of the Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernize and expand its network across the country. The focus on West Bengal and Assam reflects the strategic importance of these states, particularly in the context of the upcoming elections. Railway officials state that the new services will not only improve connectivity but also generate employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region. The full list of trains, routes, and timings has been released by the Indian Railways, allowing passengers to plan their journeys accordingly. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to infrastructure development and improved transportation facilities for citizens.
The timing of the announcement has drawn attention, with some observers suggesting a link to the electoral calendar. However, railway authorities maintain that the projects were planned and approved based on long-term infrastructure needs and passenger demand. The new trains are expected to be operational in phases, with some services commencing immediately and others being introduced over the next few months.
