The National Inter-State Athletics Meet, which kicks off in Chennai on August 20, marks the final chance for Indian athletes to qualify for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. With the qualification cutoff on August 24, this five-day event is crucial for athletes to secure their places at the prestigious global competition.
Shubman Gill Eyes World Championships Qualification
One athlete drawing attention is Animesh Kujur, the 200m sprinter who is on the edge of qualifying. Kujur currently ranks 42nd in the Road to Tokyo rankings, which positions him within the qualification range. His performance in Chennai could be pivotal in securing a spot at his World Championship debut. Kujur has impressed this season with his swift timings, including a bronze medal at the Asian Championships in Gumi, where he also broke the national record with a 20.32-second performance.
Murali Sreeshankar Sets His Sights on World Championship Entry
Murali Sreeshankar, India’s top long jumper, will also be one to watch. Recently, he came very close to meeting the World Championship standard of 8.27m at the World Athletics Continental Tour in Bhubaneswar. After making a strong comeback from knee surgery, Sreeshankar has already jumped beyond 8m this season, sparking renewed hopes for India’s long jump contingent.
Neeraj Chopra Leads India’s Javelin Hopes
In javelin, Neeraj Chopra, the defending World Champion and two-time Olympic medalist, will be the focal point for India. Along with Sachin Yadav and Yashvir Singh, Chopra will lead the charge for qualification. Yadav, with a silver medal at the Asian Championships, is ranked 22nd, staying within the top-36 cut-off, while Rohit Yadav is just outside the cut-off and will need a strong performance to secure his place.
Annu Rani in Women’s Javelin
In the women’s javelin, Annu Rani, the Asian Games champion, is in excellent form after winning gold in Poland with a throw of 62.59m and another gold at the Indian Open in Bhubaneswar. A strong performance in Chennai will guarantee her spot in Tokyo.
Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker in Triple Jump
Praveen Chithravel has already earned a direct berth for the World Championships with a 17.37m jump, while Abdulla Aboobacker, ranked 30th, will look to improve his ranking and secure a spot with a strong finish in Chennai.
Relay Squads Struggle for Qualification
India’s relay squads have been a disappointment this season. Both the men’s and mixed 4x400m teams failed to secure automatic qualification at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou. Despite a national record of 2:59.05 at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, the men’s team has struggled due to injuries and poor form. India currently sits 19th in the rankings, and a sub-3-minute finish in Chennai seems unlikely, making qualification a tough battle.
Distance Runners and Other Key Contenders
Gulveer Singh is one of the few distance runners to have already qualified for the World Championships, breaking the 5000m standard with a national record of 12:59.77 in Boston. He is also close to qualifying in the 10,000m but will not compete in Chennai. Parul Chaudhary, who has already qualified in the steeplechase, will also miss the event, leaving Ankita Dhyani to chase her Worlds dream in the 5000m.
The Final Push for Tokyo
For these athletes, the National Inter-State Meet represents the final opportunity to convert their rankings and form into a World Championships ticket. It’s a crucial event for India’s elite track and field athletes as they vie for a place at the Tokyo World Championships, which will feature the world’s best in athletics.
