Authorities in Montana have launched a massive manhunt after four people were shot and killed at The Owl Bar in Anaconda late Friday night. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Michael Paul Brown, remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.
The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. local time at the historic bar located in Goosetown, a neighborhood in the southwestern Montana town of Anaconda. The Montana Division of Criminal Investigation confirmed the incident, while the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said it was assisting in the response.
The Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Law Enforcement Center released a photo of Brown and urged the public not to approach him. Authorities advised residents to stay indoors, lock their doors, and contact 911 if they see anything suspicious.
The Granite County Sheriff’s Office added that the suspect was last seen wearing a tie-dyed shirt, blue jeans, and an orange bandana. SWAT teams have already searched and cleared his residence in Anaconda.
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte said he is closely monitoring the situation. “Please join Susan and me in praying for the victims, their loved ones, and the brave law enforcement officers responding to this tragedy,” he said in a social media post.
The FBI is also involved in the investigation, and Montana Senator Steve Daines told local media that police drones are being used to support the search effort.
Anaconda, a town of roughly 10,000 people once known for its copper smelting industry, has been left shaken by the rare act of mass violence. The Owl Bar, established in 1893, has long been a local landmark.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or any potential motive. The investigation remains ongoing.
