Manchester United may have lost 1-0 to Arsenal at Old Trafford, but their performance offered plenty of encouragement for fans and manager Ruben Amorim.
After conceding an early goal through Altay Bayindir’s error, United responded with an aggressive, front-foot display that showed clear signs of progress compared to last season.
A More Positive Approach
Amorim once again set his team up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, but the difference this time was intent. Wing-backs Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu pushed high up the pitch, while substitutes like Amad Diallo added more attacking drive.
United pressed Arsenal bravely, often leaving themselves exposed, but they matched the Gunners’ intensity and created enough chances to suggest their system is working.
New Signings Make an Impact
Summer arrivals Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo gave United’s attack a fresh edge. Their physicality, pace and willingness to run behind defenders forced Arsenal’s backline to sit deeper than usual. That shift prevented Mikel Arteta’s side from dominating possession, something they normally do with ease.
United registered 22 shots, seven on target, and 36 touches in the Arsenal box – their most against the Gunners in a Premier League match since the famous 8-2 win in 2011.
Midfielder Mason Mount also impressed, adding energy and creativity in midfield, while Benjamin Sesko’s return to full fitness promises even more attacking options.
Still Work to Do
Despite the positives, question marks remain. Bayindir’s mistake highlighted ongoing concerns in goal, while the midfield balance between Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes still looks uncertain. A more mobile, ball-winning midfielder could strengthen the spine.
Encouraging Signs for the Season Ahead
For Amorim, the biggest takeaway was not the result but the performance. United looked fitter, more confident, and more dangerous in attack compared to much of last season.
They may have left Old Trafford empty-handed, but they played like a side that believed they could win – a mentality shift that could prove vital as the season unfolds.
