West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has leveled serious allegations against the Election Commission of India (ECI), claiming the use of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-devised Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the recent deletions from the state’s voter list. Banerjee voiced her concerns during a public rally in Hooghly district, alleging a systematic attempt to disenfranchise voters ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader specifically pointed to discrepancies in the voter rolls, stating that names were being removed without due process or valid reasons. She asserted that the ECI was not acting independently and was instead influenced by the ruling BJP at the center. “They are using AI tools designed by the BJP to delete names from the voter list,” Banerjee stated, without providing specific evidence of the AI tools’ origin or operation.
Voter Roll Purge Concerns
Banerjee’s accusations come amidst a broader national debate regarding the purification of voter lists. The ECI has been undertaking a drive to remove duplicate entries, deceased individuals, and shifted voters from the electoral rolls to ensure their accuracy. However, opposition parties, including the TMC, have expressed concerns that this process is being used selectively to target voters perceived to be unfavorable to the BJP.
The TMC has formed a dedicated team to investigate the alleged discrepancies and assist affected voters in re-registering. Party officials claim they have received numerous complaints from citizens whose names have been inexplicably removed from the voter list. They are compiling a report to submit to the ECI, demanding a thorough investigation into the matter.
Responding to the allegations, a spokesperson for the ECI stated that the voter list purification process is being conducted strictly in accordance with established rules and guidelines. They denied any political interference and affirmed the commission’s commitment to free and fair elections. The ECI further explained that the use of technology, including AI, is limited to identifying potential discrepancies for field verification by election officials, and that no names are removed without proper investigation and adherence to legal procedures.
The BJP has dismissed Banerjee’s claims as baseless and politically motivated. Party leaders accused the TMC of attempting to create a narrative of victimhood to garner sympathy votes. They argued that the ECI is a constitutional body and is fully capable of conducting elections impartially. “These are desperate attempts by a losing party to discredit the election process,” a BJP spokesperson said.
The controversy surrounding the voter rolls in West Bengal has heightened political tensions in the state, which is a key battleground in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The ECI is under pressure to address the concerns raised by the opposition parties and ensure that the voter list is accurate and inclusive. The outcome of the elections in West Bengal could significantly impact the overall results of the national polls, making the integrity of the electoral process paramount.
Further investigations and scrutiny of the voter list purification process are expected in the coming days as political parties gear up for the electoral battle. The ECI has assured stakeholders that it will take all necessary steps to maintain the credibility of the elections.
