The Maldives is on track to set new tourism records this year, with the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) now projecting 2.3 million international arrivals for 2025. This revised forecast, up from May’s estimate of 2.2 million, follows a strong first half of the year in which visitor numbers rose 9.1% compared to the same period in 2024. By June 30, more than 1.1 million travellers had already arrived in the island nation.
Officials say the growth is being fuelled by a mix of favourable global travel trends, targeted marketing to high-value tourists, and ongoing upgrades to the country’s tourism infrastructure. The Maldives’ reputation for luxury resorts, pristine beaches, and private island escapes continues to attract visitors from key markets including Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
2026 Outlook: Even More Visitors Expected
Looking ahead, the MMA forecasts 2.4 million tourist arrivals in 2026, building on this year’s momentum. Planned improvements to infrastructure and new tourism initiatives are expected to further enhance the visitor experience, keeping the Maldives at the forefront of the global luxury travel market.
Tourists Staying Longer
The country is also seeing growth in the average length of stay. By mid-2025, total “bed nights” — the number of nights spent by tourists in accommodations — reached 6.9 million, up 1.2% from last year. Industry experts say this reflects demand for more immersive, extended vacations, whether in overwater villas, wellness retreats, or private island resorts.
Infrastructure Driving Growth
Recent developments, including the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport, have helped accommodate higher visitor volumes by improving capacity and reducing wait times. Investments in connectivity and facilities are part of a broader national strategy to sustain tourism growth well into the future.
A Record-Breaking Year Ahead
With strong arrivals, longer stays, and upgraded infrastructure, 2025 is set to be a record-breaking year for the Maldives. Tourism officials say the country’s ability to combine high-end experiences with world-class service ensures it will remain a top global travel destination for years to come.
