In a historic moment for Indian cinema, Mahavatar Narasimha has become the first-ever Hindi animated film to cross the ₹100 crore mark at the domestic box office. The mythological epic, which tells the legendary story of Lord Narasimha, Hiranyakashyap, and Prahlad, has earned ₹107.65 crore in its Hindi version within just 16 days, shattering long-standing records for the animation genre in India.
Traditionally, animated films in India — even high-budget ones — have struggled to cross the ₹30–40 crore mark. Mahavatar Narasimha, however, has defied industry expectations through a mix of positive reviews, strong family appeal, and targeted promotions in schools and spiritual communities.
Box Office Journey
The film opened modestly at ₹1.35 crore on Day 1, jumped to ₹3.25 crore on Day 2, and collected ₹6.8 crore on Day 3, signalling strong weekend momentum. Weekday collections stayed steady, with ₹5.75 crore on Day 4 and ₹4 crore on Day 5.
Its second weekend delivered the biggest surprise — Day 9 brought in ₹17.5 crore, the film’s highest single-day figure, proving its word-of-mouth strength. By Day 16, a ₹15 crore haul pushed its Hindi collections past the ₹100 crore mark.
What Worked for the Film
Industry insiders credit the film’s success to:
- Director Ashwin Kumar’s vision and emotionally resonant storytelling
- Improved animation quality, showcasing significant progress by Indian artists
- Effective audience targeting, especially families, students, and devotees
- Repeat viewership driven by cultural and spiritual connection
With ₹145 crore total earnings across languages and no major competition for a few more days, the film could add another ₹20–25 crore before facing big releases like Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik Roshan–Jr NTR’s War 2. Given the buzz, crossing the ₹200 crore milestone now seems well within reach.
Mahavatar Narasimha’s box office run is a landmark achievement, proving that Indian audiences will embrace animated cinema when the storytelling is powerful and the emotions are authentic.
