Lionel Messi Opens Up About His FIFA World Cup 2026 Plans — “I’ll Listen to My Body Before Deciding”

Football legend Lionel Messi has finally addressed the ongoing speculation about his participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Argentine superstar expressed his desire to represent Argentina once again but said the final decision will depend on his physical condition closer to the tournament.

Messi, 38, currently plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS). Speaking to NBC News, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said, “It’s something extraordinary to be able to be in a World Cup and I would love to. I would like to be there, to be well and be an important part of helping my national team, if I am there.”

He further added that he would assess his readiness next year. “I’m going to see how I feel when I start preseason with Inter. I’ll decide if I can really be 100%, if I can be useful to the team — and then make a decision.”

Messi led Argentina to a historic World Cup triumph in 2022, fulfilling his lifelong dream and cementing his place among football’s all-time greats. With 195 international appearances and 114 goals, he remains the heart of Argentina’s squad.

Despite his age, Messi’s passion for the game remains undiminished. “We’re coming off winning the last World Cup, and being able to defend it again would be spectacular. It’s always a dream to play for the national team,” he said.

Speaking about his life in the United States, Messi also shared, “Miami allows us to live well, enjoy life, and be calm. It’s a city that lets my kids be themselves and live freely every day.”
